Description

BRADFORD
SS 40 NW

6/20 Adelaide
-

- II

Cottage. C18 with C19 addition. Rendered cob and stone rubble walls. Thatched
roof gabled to left end and half-hipped to right. Brick lateral stack at rear.
Plan: very small 2-room plan consisting of main room, through which house is
entered, which has a fireplace in the inner corner and a very small service room
beyond it. A C19 lean-to was added at that end.
Exterior: 2 storeys. Elevation facing road has only one C19 or early C20 casement
window. The rear elevation has a small light at its left end and on the 1st floor
and an early C20 2-light casement on each floor in the right-hand end wall.
Projecting from this wall is a C19 thatched roof porch with a plank door inside it.
Interior: C19 chimneypiece and mantel in main room and tongue and groove partition
separating it from small room beyond.
This is a rare survival of a virtually unaltered very small cottage which must once
have been common in Devon.
