Description

CHERITON FITZPAINE
SS 80 NE
7/6
- Nos. 1, 2 and 3 Leys Cottages
- II

3 adjoining cottages. Late C17, extended in early C19. Plastered cob and rubble;
cob or rubble stacks topped with C19 and C20 brick; thatched roof. Row of 3
adjoining cottages facing south with No. 1 at the left (west) end. Originally a pair
of 2-room cottages sharing central stack. No. 3 at right end is intact but No. 2
appears to have been reduced slightly in early C19 when a 1-room cottage (now no. 1)
was added to left end with end stack. 2 storeys. Overall irregular 4-window front
of late C19 and C20 casements, most with glazing bars. Roof is hipped each end.
Most interior features are hidden by C19 and C20 cladding but rear corner diagonal
fireplaces shown in Nos. 2 & 3 and No. 2 has exposed axial beam with step stops.
Roof is original and purlins are carried on closed trusses between the rooms.
