Detached house. C18. Stucco, roof of tiles, brick stacks.
2 storeys with dormers in roof, 3-window range to
double-fronted entrance front, which is flanked by pilasters.
Round-arched entrance framed by pilasters supporting an open
pediment with panelled soffit and archivolt; fanlight;
panelled door of original design; canted bays to either side
with sashes of original design and panelled spandrels;
modillion cornice and 2 flat-arched dormers in roof; end
stacks. 3 pitched roofs in parallel run east-west, with a
range on the west side and then a lower hipped range of 2
storeys to the north. Left-hand return has a 5-sided 2-storey
bay with modillion cornice and flat-arched dormer. Garage
range to Falmer Road much altered.
INTERIOR: not inspected.
Rudyard Kipling lived at The Elms from 1897-1903.
