Herring House

GV II

House, now offices and flat. Early C19. Painted stucco; hipped
Welsh slate roof, with tile rear pitch; no stacks visible.
Central staircase plan.
EXTERIOR: 3 storeys; 3-window range. End pilaster strips and
top frieze and cornice. Entrance to right of centre and left
end have pilaster strips and cornices to C20 glazed doors;
each entrance has tripartite window to right, one with
4/4:8/8:4/4 sashes and one with 4/4:6/6:4/4 sashes. First
floor has windows with sills, and architraves to 8/8 sashes
flanking 6/6 sash; second floor has similar windows: 4/8
sashes flanking 3/6 sash.
Rear has catslide tile roof over outshut with central
timber-framed stair wing; long wing to left and half-gabled
wing to right, with central C20 single-storey flat-roofed
addition.
INTERIOR: not inspected, but noted as having exposed
close-studded framing to left return, probably part of the
White Swan Hotel (qv); stick-baluster staircase.
