Causeway on drive to east of Alscot
Park and retaining walls of Fish
Pool

GV II

Causeway with retaining walls to pool to west side. Possibly
c1750 by Thomas Woodward. Ashlar on rock-faced masonry.
Causeway with balustrades runs between 2 pools, the pool to
west with ashlar retaining walls attached to causeway.
West side has segmental-headed central opening and smaller
opening to left in rock-faced retaining wall; roll moulding
above and balustrade with ogee arches between square and
octagonal piers with caps; central panel has ramped segmental
head over cartouche with West arms and flanking drops of fruit
and flowers.
Ends curve forward and slope down to retaining wall and to
rectangular pool, which has roll moulding and 2 outlets to
west end.
Similar balustrade to east side has similar details and
central panel with West crest to cartouche and motto beneath;
it is longer, stretching along west edge of upper pool and
ending in retaining walls, one to north is terminated by
rectangular plinth with sculpture of lion.
