Description

FINGRINGHOE

986/0/10036 UPPER HAYE LANE
24-SEP-01 Barn at Upper Haye Farm

II

Barn. Mid-C14 with C19 alterations. Timber-framed with black-weatherboarding and low-pitched corrugated iron roof.
PLAN: Four bay, aisled barn with off-centre mid-strey to west elevation and corresponding doors to rear elevation.
ELEVATION: Aisles raised and roof structure added in the C19 and the main interest is to the interior. Mid-strey formerly gabled but now with flat roof.
INTERIOR: Jowled arcade posts. Arcade plates with splayed and under-squinted scarf joints that suggest barn was constructed from south end. Heavy and steep arcade braces. Tenoned and halved passing braces between arcade posts and tie beams. Aisles have 'reversed-assembly' with tie beam carrying the wall plates and with remains of tension braces at two levels in each flank elevation. Face orientation of passing-braces confirm that the barn has always had an off-centre threshing-floor which is unusual. C19 roof above tie beams.
A relatively complete mid-C14 barn with some C19 alteration.
