A terrace of houses, including a shop and offices. Late C18, and developed incrementally in the early-mid C19, with C20 alteration and remodelling. Brown/buff brick with painted stone dressings, eaves cornice, broad ridge chimney stacks and a slate roof covering.

PLAN: Linear terrace plan on a gently sloping frontage.

EXTERIOR: The terrace is of 3 storeys above basemnts, with a common eaves line, but variations in the levels of window heads and cills, reflecting the incremental development of the site. It comprises 7 dwellings, with no.135 altered to form a shop at ground floor level,and no.147 now used as offices. All of the houses have 2 windows to each storey, those to the upper floor smaller than those below. Nos. 137 to 143 each have 2 windows to the ground floor, and blind walling above the doorways. Nos. 145 and 147 are narrower in width, with a single ground floor window to the side of the doorway, and with window openings above. Nos. 135 and 137 appear to be the earliest houses, no.137 retaining a late C18 doorcase with semi-circular overlight, open pediment and a flight of 5 stone steps. The ground floor of no. 135 was remodelled in the late C19, and a shop front with stall riser,pilasters, 4 light display window and signboard. Window openings throughout the terrace have wedge lintels and projecting sills, with 2 over 2 pane sash frames to nos. 135, 137, 139 and 141. Nos 143, 145 and 147 have relacement frames of various designs within original openings.

INTERIORS: Not inspected.

HISTORY: Nos. 135 and 137 appear to be present on Horwood's map of 1803.

Nos. 135-147 ( even ) Duke Street are of special interest as a late C18 and early C19 terrace of dwellings forming part of a significant historic street frontage within the Duke Street Conservation area. They are part of a range of dwelling types which characterise the evolution of residential areas close to Liverpool's earliest enclosed dock and contribute strongly to the areas distinctive character and appearance.
