ASHPRINGTON SX85Nll Bow 6/39 Steps Cottage

House, extended and converted into 3 cottages and reverted to 1 house. Probably late C17 or early C18, possibly with earlier origins; extended and converted to cottages in circa early to mid C19 reunited and extended again in the C20. Rendered cob and stone rubble. Thatched roof with gabled ends. Stacks with rendered shafts at the gable end of the original house, the left had stack is now an axial stack. Plan: 3-room single depth plan; the 2 right hand rooms are probably the extent of the original house. In circa early to mid C19 the house was converted into a row of three 1-room plan cottages by the extension at the left end of a 1-room plan addition. In the C20 it was reunited as one house again and a small extension was added at the left end. Exterior: 2 storeys. Asymmetrical 1:2 window range. C18 or early C19 wooden casement to first floor left. To the left and right of centre late C19 or C20 glazed doors with late C19 or C20 wooden lattice porches. At the left hand end a 1-room plan addition, stone rubble with a grouted scantle slate roof,1 storey and attic, late C19 2-light casement with glazing bars and gabled dormer with timber casement and C20 glazed door. Small late C20 addition at extreme left hand end. Interior: Interior much altered but some C19 joinery survives. The straight feet of the roof principals can be seen on the first floor. The trusses are mostly soft wood but one truss at the left hand end has much heavier oak principals. At the right hand end there are said to be blackened roof timbers associated with the curing of fish. Steps Cottage is on the site of a salting recorded in the Domesday Book.
