circa 10 metres
Memorial to William Walton. Circa 1906 for the officials and workmen of the
Dean and Chapter colliery. Sandstone ashlar; Art Nouveau style. Fluted
obelisk with central patera, supported by 4 central leaf-decorated scrolls,
stands on high corniced pedestal with moulded plinth and scrolled diagonal
buttresses. Each diagonal ends in impost moulding of arched recessed panels,
that on south with inscription in Gothic, sans serif and Roman scripts:
'ERECTED/BY THE/OFFICIALS AND WORKMEN/OF THE DEAN AND CHAPTER COLLIERY/To the
Memory/OF THE LATE/WILLIAM WALTON/(OVERMAN)/ WHO SACRIFICED HIS LIFE/IN
SAVING THE LIVES/OF TWO BOYS/AT DEAN BANK/AUGUST 8TH 1906'.
