War Memorial with
dwarf walls,
railings and
gate around

War memorial. 1923 by E.C. Kenmir for Spennymoor Urban District. Site the
gift of the Weardale Iron and Coal Company. Sandstone ashlar; wrought iron
railings and gate. Baroque style. 4 Ionic piers on large square base support
entablature, on which rests panelled square base of smaller piers supporting
entablature with dome above; prominent cornices to entablatures and to upper
base. Square-section blocks on each base, the lower with low-relief sword and
'PRO DEO ET PRO PATRIA' on west, and names of dead, without ranks, on other 3
sides; added panels sloping from base to these, at north and south, bear names
of dead in second World War. Long inscription below cross refers to the men
falling 'while defending our liberty' and ends 'this people ... whose hearths
they saved from shame for many and many an age proclaim ETERNAL HONOUR TO

Dwarf walls forming square enclosure have chamfered coping; railings of square-
section iron have top and bottom rails; principals are set into walls; heads
are graduated downwards between principals; narrow gate in similar style on
west side.
