House. Early C17, altered in C18 and C20. Timber framed, plastered with facade
of red brick in Flemish bond, roofed with handmade red clay tiles. 3 bays
facing S, with original external stack on right return wall, and C18/C19 axial
stack left of centre. Rear wing of 3/4 bays from left side, with original
external stack at right side. C18 extension in rear angle, the roof parallel to
that of the main range, and single-storey lean-to extension in angle behind it.
C20 single-storey extension to left of rear end. 2 storeys. 2-window range of
C18/early C19 sashes of 20 lights, the lower ones with hood moulds. Both
original stacks are in English bond with grouped diagonal shafts, the front one
rebuilt at the top. The front range has chamfered transverse beams with stops
of unusual type, broached with the points squared off. In the right upper front
room there is a hearth with depressed arch, plastered. The mantel beam of the
rear stack is chamfered with lamb's tongue and bar stops. Jowled posts. The
walls of the rear wing have been raised approx. 1.5 metres in the C18. There
are historical records that Brent Hall was destroyed by fire in 1652, but it is
difficult to reconcile this information with the stylistic evidence of
construction in the early part of the C17; presumably the destruction was not
total, which way account for the unusual plan. RCHM 12.
