TL 41 SE SHEERING SHEERING LOWER ROAD

Cottage, late C17, extended in C20. Timber-framed, plastered, roofed with
handmade red clay tiles. 3 bays aligned E-W, with external chimney on W gable,
and internal chimney in E bay to N of ridge. C20 extensions to N and NE.
Single storey with attics. S elevation (facing Back Lane), 2 C20 casement
windows and glazed side door, 3 gabled dormers with C20 casement windows.
Pargetted with zig-zag lines and concentric circles arranged in panels.
Original floors in W and middle bays, axial beams chamfered, common joists
unchamfered with lamb's tongue stops in W bay only. Framing exposed internally
in upper W and middle rooms. Posts without jowls but with well-cut lap-dovetail
tying joints. Primary straight bracing. Tiebeam between middle and E bay
intact. Tiebeam between middle and W bay severed for an inserted doorway, but
strongly framed round door. Chisel-cut date 1711 on lintel, probably represents
the date of insertion of this doorway.
