4/89 Barn, about 80m west of the Old
Grange (formerly listed as part of
The Grange, with two barns 80 yards
2.10.54 to the west)
Barn and stable. C17, altered C19. Brick-nogged timber framing,
on stone plinth, partly renewed in brick: generally tiled, but
part stone-slate roof. Eight bay building, with 2 symmetrical
threshing floors, end bays lofted. Framing 4 square panels high.
Elevation to yard: boarded door to stable on left: C19 brick
gable built off wallplate for transverse roof to end bay. Double
doorway to threshing floor on right, 3 panels high, originally with
separate doorposts against main posts: doors missing. To right
some top panels with patterned air vents in brickwork: some
weatherboarding low down. Second threshing floor doorway as left,
but 3 panels wide over, not 4. End bay on right brick ground
floor, blocked door; boarded door to loft over. Rear, double
doors to threshing floor narrower and lower.
Interior: stone-paved threshing floor left: sill each side with
curved braces rising to main wall posts, 2 centre vertical posts to
tie beam (centre sill cut away on left only). Trusses 2 pairs
angle struts, collar only on left of threshing floor: 3 pairs butt
purlins, no ridge member left half building, square on right. Wind
braces left cut rafters, rise from wallplate to centre purlin,
reverse back to ridge: right end braces to first and third purlins
from truss. Similar framing to left of right threshing floor; to
right 2 long braces main posts to tie beam only. End bays walled
off, possibly an alteration. Built as one structure: rafters to
left half may have been renewed in C18, so altering wind bracing
and ridge details. Building set against it on left not of special
interest. Forms group with house (q.v.).
