25.8.60 Cromwell House
House, said to be C16. Probably mid-C17 extended and altered C18. Gabled Cotswold
house, former home of the Aylesworths. 2 storeys and attics. Rendered rubble
with fictive quoins; Cotswold stone roofs. Originally L-plan. 2 gables to front
each with one range of mullioned windows (drips to attic), C20 window on ground
floor to right; restored metal casements. Modern ashlar chimney to right. Good
Tudor arch doorway (in return to east), in recess with key and imposts, under
single light window. 2 storey wing to rear, 1 range of 4 light king-mullion
windows and 2 windows in ashlar further extension, bullnose cills, plain sur-
rounds and keys. Interior: ground floor has 2 early C17 Baroque influenced
panelled fireplaces in rear wing (keystones and rounded corners), residual panel-
ling on east wall; several period features including a display cabinet and panel-
led doors. Stairs altered. Through-purlin roof.
