west of Lower Mill House

Stone pedestal. Late C18. Limestone. Similar in form to a
circular pedestal tomb. Height c2m. Two large fielded panels
(with no legible inscription) on sides. One large console bracket
with foliate and acanthus decoration on east side was once matched
by a similar bracket on the west side. Moulded capping with frieze
incorporating a frieze with swag decoration, tapering stone column
above with a large square mortice hole suggesting the column was
once greater in height or had a large finial. This column
represents the last remains of the features once in the grounds of
a tea drinking house known to have been in existence on this site
by 1784. The garden features include grottoes, a pavilion and a
Chinese temple. George III is known to have visited the tea rooms
and in the early C19 it was said to be one of the main attractions
of the village. The house and tea rooms were demolished c1900.
