House. Probably late C15 with mid-C19 alterations. Timber-framed, rendered
infill on lias limestone rubble and handmade brick base, plain tiled roof.
Two framed bays aligned north/south with former through-passage in north bay;
south gable end has a large external handmade brick chimney with off-sets,
detached stack and lean-to bread oven; north gable end has a C19 external
brick chimney with off-sets and bread oven. Single storey and attic with
dormers. Framing: cruck-framed; two rows of panels from sill to wall-plate;
full crucks visible at both gable ends, south gable end blades now stop
just above purlin level. West front elevation: windows are leaded casements;
ground floor has a 2-light wood-mullioned window in south bay; main entrance
to right of north bay has a gabled timber-framed porch, 5-light diamond-
mullioned openings to front and left side, open to right side, and an original
door with 4-centred arched doorhead; also, timber-framed porch in the angle
with the south external chimney with a glazed 4-light diamond-mullioned window
to the front and, within, a ledged and battened C19 door. The base of the
south chimney has a 2-light west window, and that of the north chimney has
two rectangular lights facing north. Attic light in north gable end.
Interior: complete intermediate cruck truss and swept wind-braces; chamfered
main beams and fireplace lintels; south bread oven is blocked; the wall-frame
opposite the main entrance is interrupted where the through-passage doorway
would have been situated. This house is a rare survival in its complete
state with little alteration. (BoE, p 200).
