TL 3925 BRAUGHING FLEECE LANE
9/20 Braughing Chapel
(Indpt. Free Church)
Chapel. Reputedly John Bunyan's preaching barn from Hitchin,
moved to Datchett and re-erected on present site 1762, by Samuel
Copperwheat a Free Church preacher. Plastered timber framing.
Steep tiled roof with gabled ends. Four bays between tie beams,
having the original principal rafters, purlins and collars. It
is not certain that the building was erected solely as a chapel,
it had two galleries, east and west, with the pulpit on the north
side, only the gallery at the west end remains. The interior was
stripped and re-arranged in the C19. The exterior is very plain.
Plastered walls. C19 and C20 windows high in walls. C20 gabled
south porch and C20 vestry. (Hertfordshire Countryside Jan 1979
