Country house. c1780-90 around inner core of c1751 and with later additions and alterations including extensive restorations c1911 after fire,and addition of chapel. By Samuel Wyatt and Sir Christopher Sykes, 2nd Baronet, around core of house for Sir Mark Sykes, 1st Baronet, with restorations by Walter Brierley for Sir Mark Sykes, 6th Baronet, and reconstruction work by H H Martin of Cheltenham. Nottinghamshire qshlarwith Welsh slate roof and Coade stone plaques. H-shaped on plan with central hallway and octagonal chapel to north. Main facade of 2 storeys, 3 bays of which the centre is recessed slightly, and side elevations of 3-storeys, 5-bays between 2-storey, single-bay projecting wings. Entrance now to north-east side an early C20 porch with 6-fielded-panel double door with fanlight with radial glazing bars between Ionic columns,with cornice. Main, south-east facade: flight of steps to central entrance a part-glazed door between 15-pane, unequally hung sashes beneath semicircular Tuscan portico with cornice. To either side are elliptically arched recesses with tripartite windows, 15-pane unequally hung sashes with aprons, Tuscan columns between and flanking Tuscan responds supporting frieze. To first floor are 3 round-arched recesses with tripartite windows, 15-pane, unequally hung sashes with aprons with Ionic columns between and responds supporting cornice. Within each arch a Coade stone relief depicting agricultural scenes. Eaves cornice. Blocking course. Hipped roof. Ridge and rear stacks. Sides: projecting wings have similar elliptical and semicircular arched window recesses and otherwise to ground and first floor are 15-pane unequally hung sashes and to second floor are 9-pane unequally hung sashes. West side with giant pilasters to first and second floors of 3 central bays supporting elaborately decorated pediment. To north-west corner, chapel with entrance to rear, a 6-fielded-panel door. Multi-paned windows within moulded basket- arched surrounds with keystones and moulded aprons, pilaster strips to angles. Cornice and low parapet. Concealed roof. Interior. Mainly a recreation of the elaborate Neoclassical interior, using original Jackson moulds for the plasterwork. With stucco-decorated pilaster strips, frieze and ceiling and drawing room with more elaborate frieze, ceiling and arched recesses. Library with vaulted ceiling in 3 square groined bays with 2 short tunnel vaults between, decorated with stucco. Ionic pilasters between bookshelves. The dining room ceiling a recreation of that c1751 as embellished by Rose. Entrance hall by Brierley has heavily rusticated door surrounds. Main hall redesigned by Brierley has 2 Tuscan arcades and imperial staircase with wrought-iron balustrade ornamented with elephant's heads; central domed lantern on coupled columns. Rear staircase reuses original wrought-iron, arcaded balustrade. Turkish room c1914 lined with tiles from Damascus. Some original marble fireplaces.
