1841-3, by Sir Gilbert Scott and George Moffatt. Range of buildings in limestone
ashlar in the Elizabethan style with mullion and transom windows and turrets
with ogee domes. U-shaped layout. Centre block with prominent projecting gatehouse
3-storeys high. Round-arched entrance with the inscription "A structure of hope
built on the foundation of faith by the hand of charity". The flanking wings
are 2-storeyed with an arcaded ground floor and central-shaped gables.
Built as the Infant Orphan Asylum, first founded by Dr Andrew Reed in 1827.
On a prominent site facing Eagle Pond.
