24.2.58 Church of the Immaculate
Conception (formerly listed
as Roman Catholic Church
of the Immaculate Conception)
Church. 1844-49 by J J Scoles with later additions by H Clutton and
W H Romaine-Walker. Decorated Gothic style. Coursed rubble with fine dressings.
South entrance front with gable and rose window. Interior with red polished granite clustered columns to nave arcade. Fine fittings and furnishings. High altar by Augustus Welby Northmore Pugin. Several side altars, some by A E Purdie, with contemporary sculpture, metalwork, paintings, mosaic and stained glass. West front redesigned 1951 by Adrian Gilbert Scott; new west window by Evie Hone.
