The following building was de-listed on 28th October 1999.
ASHTON-UNDER-LYNE ASHTON NEW WHARF,
SJ 99 NW CANAL BASIN
Canal warehouse. "Ashton Canal Warehouse 1834" on stone
although the upper storeys were lost by fire leaving only 1
storey which has been incorporated into the Heritage Centre,
c.1986, by the addition of a second storey and a large
hipped roof. Brick with C20 slate roof and stone dressings.
Large rectangular plan fronting onto the canal basin and
enclosed yards. 3 arched shipping holes, one large and 2
small, are flanked on either side by 2 large cart openings.
Their disposition allowed for convenient transhipment. All
the openings have rusticated stone surrounds with round
arches and triple keystones. Even now they create a
dignified and symmetrical elevation with a clear expression
of function. The wharfs on either side of the shipping holes
are enclosed by stone-coped walls which adjoin the building.
The eastern wall originally formed part of the housing to a
water-wheel, powered by water falling from canal to river
level. Each has gates with bold stone piers with moulded
