8/27 Church of St.Martin

Parish church. Medieval, restored from ruin in early C20. Flint with stone
and brick dressings. Slate roofs. West tower, nave, north aisle, chancel,
south porch. Embattled tower with diagonal buttresses. West door with
chamfered reveals rolls and fillets to arch, hollows between. 2-light early
C20 west window. Cusped roundels to ringing chamber openings; 2-light C20
bell openings, brick edged vent; gargoyles; flushwork battlements. 3 bay
nave; one early C20 3-light Perpendicular window and one restored window
with demitransoms under 4-centred arch with brick and flint voussoirs to
south. All restoration to north. 2 bay chancel with 2 restored 3-light
windows with demi-transoms. C20 priest's door. Flushwork beneath C20
5-light east window. Porch to first nave bay. Interior. Roofs of c1910.
Medieval brick tower arch with continuous brick chamfer; inner order on
corbels. C20 aisle and arcade but north nave door left in position and now
inside church having chamfered reveal merging to roll-moulded arch; 4-centred
brick rere-arch; stoop. Stoop beside south door. Brick reveals to wafer
oven in south wall of tower. C20 chancel arch and rood stair. Restored
ogee arched piscina with remains of arch for sedilia.
