Description

MILL ROAD
1. (East Side)
1483 ------------
Nos 1 to 14 (consec)
TL 0388 1/66 18.6.55.

II GV

2.
This is a continuous and wavering row of 1 storey rubble-built cottages with steep
stone slate roofs stepping down after each 2 or 3. Each cottage has 1 or 2 hipped
dormers, some being double fronted. All have very plain low doorways and simple
casement windows. Several have old stone chimney stacks, a number brick or brick
repaired. No 4 lies at right angles to the road behind No 5 )there is a passageway
through No 3); it is a full 2 storeys high and its steep gable rises clear above
the roof of No 5. At least 1 mullioned window survives. Nos 3 and 5 (together
on road front) each have 1 gabled dormer (th only exceptions in the whole row)
and.there is a moulded dripstone above a small window left of the doorway to No
5.
Probably dating from earlier C17, they all appear to be in sound structural condition.
As the first mass of building met on entering Oundle from the south (Thrapston
Road) these cottages assume greater importance than what is already theirs, by
virtue of their general character, overall form and group effect.

Nos 1 to 14 (consec) form a group.
