10/64 The Old Rectory


Rectory, now house. c.1806 enlarged 1855. Squared coursed limestone with brick
dressings to earliest part. Hipped and gabled slate roofs. Brick ridge and
internal stacks. Double depth plan with c.1855 additions to left and rear. 2
storeys plus attic. 4-window range. Late C19 two-story canted bay window on
left. Entrance to right flanked by sashes with glazing bars,horns and brick flat
arches. C20 door. First floor has 3 unhorned sashes with glazing bars. 3 roof
dormers. Interior has C19 marble fireplace, moulded ceiling cornices and ceiling
pendants, panelled doors. Roundell Palmer, 1st Earl of Selborne and Lord
Chancellor was born here in 1812, d.1895. Built by Reverend William Jocelyn
Palmer on site of old rectory pulled down between 1806-1810.
