Cottage. Datestone JE/1716 over door. Coursed ironstone rubble. Steeply pitched
thatched roof. Brick end stack on stone base. 2-unit plan. Single storey plus
attic. 2-window range. Entrance on right end has plank door, moulded wood frame
and datestone above. 2-light wood casement with wood lintel to attic. Elevation
to road has thatched staircase projection on left and a 2-light wood mullioned
window with a stop-chamfered wood lintel on right. Rear. Bread oven bulge on
left with thatched continuous covering from roof. 2-light wood casement with
stone lintel and C20 door and window with wood lintel. Two half-dormers have
2-light metal casements in wood frames. Wrought-iron casement fasteners and wood
lintels. Interior. Original 2-unit plan survives with kitchen, parlour and
pantry. Inglenook fireplace with bread oven and chamfered bressumer. Wood spiral
staircase with plank door. Stop-chamfered beam. Datestone probably to John
Edwards, village mason, who married in 1716. His father owned The Bell Inn,
Shenington. A notable dated example of a lesser vernacular dwelling with
surviving plan and interior details. Once known as Homestead Cottage.
