Description

NEWINGTON A329
5U6096 (West side)
15/45 Garden walls and garden house
18/07/63 to SE of Newington House
(Formerly listed as walls and
gates at Newington House)

GV II

Garden walls. Possibly C17 and C18. Limestone rubble and brick with some flared
headers. Walls enclose a large kitchen garden and link to the main entrance gate
(q.v.). Exterior of east and south walls is rubble; east wall has a
chequer-brick lining; that of south wall is in irregular bond with a stepped
plinth, and the wall contains a C17 4-centre arched stone doorway with recessed
spandrels. The brick west wall in in English bond with piers. The brick wall
flanking the forecourt to Newington House (q.v.) is in irregular bond with a
stepped plinth. At the south-west corner of the walled garden is a small brick
and tiled building with chequer and chevron patterning in flared headers. It is
mostly late C19/early C20, but is probably a re-building of a C17 latrine since
the stream passes beneath it.
