9/55 Nos.21 and 22
Pair of cottages. Mid C18, extended C19 and C20. Brick in Flemish bond; timber
framing with brick infill; old plain-tile roofs with brick stack. 2-unit plans
extended to rear. One storey plus attic. 2-window cottage fronts, with dentil
eaves course and segmental arches, have central doorways between 2-light
plank-shuttered casements. Doorway of No.21 (to left) is built up as a casement.
Cottages have 2 gabled dormers each and share a central stack. Left gable is
timber framed; right gable wall is partly rebuilt and returns to rear extension.
Interiors not inspected. Part of the estate village built c.1760 for the 1st
(M. Batey, "Nuneham Courtenay, an Oxfordshire C18 deserted village", Oxoniensia
Vol.33, 1968, p.108).
