Description

CHALGROVE HIGH STREET
SU6396 (South side)
11/51 No.122 (Pyke Barn Cottage)

GV II

House. Early C17, possible earlier origins. Cruck-framed. Small timber framing
with wattle and daub infill; gabled and half-hipped thatched roof; brick left
end stack. 2-unit plan. One storey and attic; 2-window range. C20 porch to
right. Late C19 two-light casements. Interior: chamfered and stopped beam to
left, winder stairs. 2-bay roof with obscured cruck truss. According to deeds in
the owner's possession the house was built in 1631 for Ezra White: the low cost
(6s.4d) and the cruck suggest a substantial rebuilding rather than a new house.
