9/239 Stables approx. 20m. E of
Cox's Hall


Stables. Mid C18, some alterations of c.1860. Coursed limestone rubble, stone
slate roof. 2-unit plan. One storey and attic; 2-window range. Brick jambs and
segmental arches to two C20 plank doors, hit-and-miss ventilator to left and
three-light barred window with mid C19 engineering brick sill. Hipped roof.
Plank loft door in right gable wall has engineering brick sill. To right is
similar 3-light barred casement and mid C19 stonework blocking the original mid
C18 double opening. Interior: Cobbled floor. Room to left has chamfered beams
and is divided into tack room and hackney stable by timber-framed partition.
Room to right has mid C19 stall, manger racks open to loft and quarter turn
stairs. 4-bay collar-truss roof with butt purlins. Subsidiary items: 4-bay
cartshed in similar materials attached to front left wall has collar truss roof
with butt purlins. Included for group value as one of a group including barn
(q.v.) and stable (q.v.) at Cox's Hall.
