17/153 Nos. 1 and 2 College Farm


Pair of houses. No.1 (right): late C18 with later additions and alterations.
Roughly coursed marlstone rubble with alternating angle quoins; artificial slate
roof. 2 storeys. Windows to left and right of central half-glazed door with
chamfered wood lintel, C20 casements with earlier chamfered wood lintels to
ground floor and 3-light leaded casements with wood lintels to first floor.
Integral end stack with red brick shaft to left. No.2 (left): circa 1800 with
later additions and alterations. Roughly coursed limestone rubble; stone slate
roof with coped verges, concrete tiles to rear. 2 storeys and attic lit from
rear. 3-window front; 16-paned glazing bar sashes in plain stone surrounds;
central 6-panel door (upper panels now glazed) under bracketed segmental-pointed
stone hood. Integral end stacks with shafts rebuilt in C20 red brick above
dripstones. Full-height gabled staircase projection to rear. Interior. No.2 only
inspected. Panelled window shutters to front and staircase with right-angled
turns rising to attic in gabled projection. Stone steps down to cellar at rear
on left lit by reused chamfered 3-light mullion window with blind right light.
Attic has double butt-purlin tie beam roof in 3 bays. Late C20 flat-roofed
addition to rear of No. 1 and late C20 gabled range in angle with staircase
projection to No.2 are not of special architectural interest.
