12/22 No. 5 (Norton House)
House. Cl7, underbuilt and refaced in the early C19. Timber framed,
underbuilt with limestone rubble, and stucco facing; slate roof,
in 2 ranges to right. 3 framed bays. 2 storeys. Deep eaves, integral
brick end stacks to right, and C17 lateral brick stack at rear off-
centre to left. 3-window front; 16-pane glazing bar sashes. Mid- to
late-C19 four-panelled door between first and second windows from right
with 4-part rectangular overlight, architrave, and bracketed hood.
Interior: evidence of former continuously jettied first floor.
Chamfered and stopped beams; 2 moulded and carved beams with bold
leaf decoration on underside (c.f. Blunden Hall, Brampton Road);
C17 corner fireplaces with chamfered lintels; early-C18 dog-leg
staircase with winders, closed string, turned balusters, moulded hand-
rail, columnular bottom newel post, and splat balusters to landing,
shaped to represent turned twisted balusters.
