Bridge over Harley
Brook at NGR
SJ 6077 0403
Bridge. Pre-circa 1838, probably by Edward Haycock. Purplish brown brick
(parapet partly re-built in mid-C20 red brick) with sandstone dressings.
3-span brick arches on stone cutwaters; rubble abutments with ashlar
string course and coping to parapet; the parapet is continued as a
low wall to north-west and south-east-on north side. There is no record
of the bridge's construction but a letter from the Much Wenlock Turnpike
Trustees to Edward Haycock in March 1838 complains of the state of the
fences on approaches; Haycock examined the bridge in May of that year
and found it to be in good repair, although the fences were nearly
destroyed - he suggested rubble walls instead. A Blackwall, Shropshire
Bridges (unpublished County Council Planning Document), Pp.84, 88.
