Description

BERRINGTON C.P. BETTON STRANGE SJ 50 NW 3/54 - Church of St. Margaret GV II Church. 1858, possibly by one of the Haycocks of Shrewsbury. Dressed red sandstone with grey sandstone ashlar dressings; plain tile roof. Early C14 Gothic style; 3-bay nave and tower and one-bay chancel, aligned north-east/south-west, and liturgical north porch. Chamfered plinth, buttresses with single offsets and parapeted gable ends with trefoil- gabled kneelers and moulded finials. Trefoil-headed lancets with chamfered reveals and hoodmoulds with carved stops; west end has wide pilaster buttress with chamfered cill band, tall lancet with chamfered reveals and returned hoodmould, and moulded cornice to former bellcote (now demolished); east window of 3 trefoil-headed lights with cusped Geometrical tracery, and hoodmould with carved stops. South-west doorway has boarded door with strap hinges, moulded archway, hoodmould with carved stops, and painted inscription: "I will pay thee my vows which my lips have uttered and my mouth has spoken when I was in trouble"; porch has angle buttresses, parapeted gable with trefoil-gabled kneelers and cross at apex, and entrance with moulded arch and hoodmould with carved stops. Interior: nave roof with collar trusses and arch bracing springing from carved corbels; single-framed chancel roof; double chamfered chancel arch, inner chamfer resting on colonnettes with moulded bases and carved stiff-leaf capitals, and hoodmould with carved stops; windows with splayed reveals and chamfered rear arches; c.1858 fittings include: altar rails, simple pulpit, eagle lectern, pews, and octagonal stone font with trefoil-headed panelled bowl; stained glass in east window in memory of Augusta Margaret Anne Scott (d. Dec. 8. 1841), other windows with clear leaded glazing. The church still has gas lighting at time of survey (March 1985) and stands within the grounds of Betton Strange Hall (q.v.). B.O.E., p. 74.
