ST 7747 NE 10/202 GV The Old Vicarage

Apparently built 1744 for the Rev Lionel Seaman. Later extensions and alterations.
2 storeys attic and basement. Ashlar front. 1 + 3 + 1 bays, centre in slight break
with quoins. Plinth. Ground floor cill band. Cornice. Parapet with moulded
coping. Glazing bar sash windows in moulded architraves, keystone to 1st floor
centre and ground floor outer windows, Gibbs surrounds to ground floor windows flanking
porch. Porch added in C19, box porch with Ionic columns to archway and pulvinated
frieze. In gable is a tablet depicting Christ the Shepherd. Modern ½-glazed door.
Hipped stone tile roof in 2 ranges. Stone chimneys with moulded capping.
Rear 4 windows, mostly with glazing bars, moulded architraves to ground floor windows
which are dropped below cill band. Basement windows have rusticated surrounds.
Angled bay to ground floor and basement for chapel. 3 hipped dormers.
Interior: Black cornerstones to Hall paving, mid C18 fireplace in hall. Original
stairs unusually sited: 3 balusters per tread, heavy handrail and ramped dado.
Ground floor room to west at back is panelled with dentil cornice and fretted dado,
marble cheeks to 'Chinese Chippendale' fireplace (see also frieze and mirror).
An 1820s sketch shows the Vicarage as 3 bays with set back wings, ground floor with
segmental relieving arches to windows flanking porch - its present appearance there-
fore must be a later remodelling.
