2/49 Gaulden Manor (Previously listed as Gaulden Farmhouse 25.2.55 - II*

House. C16 with C17 alterations. Red sandstone random rubble masonry, part rendered, slate roof, brick stacks. 2 storeys, main block gabled porch with hall to right, longer, lower service wing to left with catslide roof over outer bay. Irregularly placed fenestration, right 3-light mullioned window, first floor, six light below, four light in porch gable with pair of 3 light mullions 1st floor left, ground floor 4 light with ovolo mouldings. Square headed moulded door frame to porch with fine C16 12-panel framed door inside. Interior: the feature of this house is the exuberant plaster decoration of circa 1660. Hall, 3 moulded ceiling panels. Centre with pendant, outer with proverbs, figures, and floral decoration, frieze with scenes from the Old Testament, overmantel with figures flanking coats of arms and strapwork. 4-centred arch fireplace, to right C17 carved partition separates the "Chapel" with moulded ceiling compartments and frieze of Raphaelesque strapwork. Plasterwork overmantel in Great Chamber upstairs, 4-centred arch fireplace, coved ceiling. Jacobean dog-leg staircase.
