Parish Church. Rebuilt 1845 by the Francis brothers. Sandstone ashlar;
slate roofs. 2-bay chancel, 4-bay nave, North and South aisles. North
vestry; West tower with broach spire. Early C14 Decorated style.
Chancel has pointed windows of 2 trefoil headed lights; East window
has reticulated tracery. Aisles: Pointed 2-light windows; hood moulds
terminate in scrolls, gabled South Porch, roll moulded hood mould to
pointed archway, terminating in heads of a King and Queen; grotesques to
either side of porch. West Tower has 3 stages; semi-octagonal stair
turret on South side with lancet openings, pointed ground floor doorway
and crenellated cap; West door has one order of colonettes and roll and
fillet hood mould stopped in heads of a King. and Queen; 2-light belfry
openings; gabled openings in base of spire. Corner buttresses to
chancel, aisles, porch and tower, those to tower have carved animals:
snake, monkey, dragon and dog. Interior: Arcade of 4 pointed arches on
clustered columns; pointed chancel arch springing from engaged columns;
pointed tower arch with Wave moulding; arch braced collar truss roof to
nave, the braces supported on stone corbels with heads carved on them;
first floor stage of West tower is rib vaulted. Fittings: C19 stone
pulpit with blind cusped and crocketed panels; bowl of a Romanesque
font and 2 medieval coffins in the West tower, discovered during the
C19 rebuilding. B.O.E. P.138.
