West End House

GV
II

House and shop. C16-C17, in 2 phases, with C19 additions and considerable C19
and C20 alteration. A front range occupied entirely as a shop and a 3-cell
range to the rear. Timber framed and plastered. Pantiled roof to front
range, with glazed black tiles on the forward slope. Plaintiles and pantiles
to rear wing. 2 storeys, attic to front range only. 4 windows, set to the
right of the frontage: flush-frame sashes with glazing bars. Full-width
projecting mid C20 shopfront. Rear wing has C18-C19 casement windows and a
doorway with 6-panel raised and fielded door (the upper 2 panels glazed),
moulded architrave and C19 timber trellis porch. Internal stack, the shaft
rebuilt in white brick. Very little of the structure is visible inside. The
rear wing has a replacement roof, perhaps early C18, with stepped butt
purlins. The front range is in 2 parts. The section to the right has a 3-bay
queen-post roof with unbraced collars, probably late C16 and ante-dating the
work to the rear. This section was extended in brick in C19. Access to the
attic is provided by a straight stair with solid treads.
