LAXFIELD THE STREET
TM 27 SE
House. C15 core with later additions and much alteration. Timber framed and
plastered; colourwashed brick facade. Black pantiled roof. 2 storeys. 2
windows, 2-light casements under segmental arches. Gabled brick porch with
panelled door. Set forward to right a small single storey former shop with a
4-light shop window. In the return wall to the right a C19 4-panel door and a
further shop window with 6 lights. Internal axial stack with rebuilt shaft.
The section to the right of the stack is a former open hall: some original
studding is exposed in the rear wall, with evidence for a diamond-mullioned
hall window. C16 inserted ceiling with moulded bridging beam and re-used
medieval joists, an unusual combination. The remainder of the range is later,
the structure being concealed. A further wing extends to the rear. Included
for group value.
