1/157 Ha-Ha and garden walling
- attached to and extending
about 40m west of Nether

Garden walling and ha-ha at two main levels: part of the landscaping of Nether
Hall. Circa 1875 for Edward Greene MP. Flushed flint rubble with dressings
of red brick. The upper level has walling about 1.5m high with 9 bays between
piers. Two wide flights of limestone steps between bays 4 and 5, and 7 and 8
from the north. Each bay has a sunk panel of flint, and on each pier is a
gadrooned vase on a limestone plinth. At the south end the wall returns
eastwards for a short distance, and at the north end it returns twice, to be
linked by a higher section of plain brick walling to the house. An arm at the
north end links with the western ha-ha of similar design. This has open
balustrading between piers bearing terracotta floral panels. The balusters
are closely-set and of moulded brick. At the centre is a semi-circular
section of about 10m radius, projecting westwards. At the north end the wall
continues to incorporate a pair of gatepiers at the entrance drive and a short
section returning to the stable block (see Item 2/101. Outbuildings of Nether
Hall, The Street (south side), Pakenham, District of St. Edmundsbury).
