Description

SU 9949NE GUILDFORD HIGH STREET
(South Side)

5/111 No. 196 (Pandora's)

GV II

Formerly 2 shops, now one. C15, restored and altered in mid 1980's. Timber framed,
clad in colourwashed render over wooden ground floor, renewed plain tiled roof. Two
storeys, two framed bays with parapet and 3 velux roof lights. Stack to right. Two
12-pane glazing-bar sash windows in architrave surrounds on the first floor, C2O
wooden glazing-bar shop front below.
Interior:- roof timbers originally sooted, original structure more complete to right
half. Crown-post to right with centre purlin missing and with it the strut from the
centre crown-post to the purlin. Crown-post missing to left end. Internal evidence
suggests that the structure was partly floored and the two bays were completely
partitioned by a framed wall. Thought, by the Weald and Downland Museum, to have
originated as two individual shop units.
