Railway terminus. c.1907 for the London, Brighton and South Coast Railway. Red brick with concrete dressings and red tile roofs, concourse roofed in steel and cast iron. Terminus platforms headed by passage concourse and main building. Main building of tall single storey with 2 1/2 storey corner tower. Seven bays, first is two window tower, projecting forward, then D.W.D.W.W. Door-ways are tripartite with double doors with side lights and wood mullion and transom window over. Three light wood mullion and transom windows. Two gables with three light windows with semicircular heads above the overall canopy. Roof hipped over booking hall. Tower with scalloped parapet, pyramid roof surmounted by clock. Side elevation has single storey range with various openings and main entrance to concourse. Apart from the main concourse there is a square carriage bay with louvred roof of steel and iron construction and two platforms,one with an iron canopy and the other with a brick screen wall. Concourse. Roofed in 6 bays by steel Warren girders supported by the main building on one side and iron columns with glazing between on the platform side. The refreshment room has a 5 light domed bay window. A K6 telephone box stands beside it. A complete example of the seaside terminus station of the Edwardian period.
