1852-4 by Sir George Gilbert Scott. Large, impressive stone church in Early English
style; nave and transepts with clerestorey, aisles, chancel, south east chapel,
north porch, tower over crossing. Dignified interior has remarkably complete set
of fixtures; fine rood screen, carved stone pulpit, elaborately carved font with
wood cover, well designed carved choir stalls. Steps up to chancel and altar with
carved wooden reredos. Painted roofs. An important landmark in the town. VCH,
