9/38 Friars Gate

Includes No.23 Market Street.
Two houses, now offices, and archway. Late C18 with mid C19 additions and
alterations; rear range of Friars Gate is dated 1795. Whitewashed imitation
ashlar render. Old plain-tile roofs; C19 brick ridge and right end stacks.
U-plan, with wings to rear. 3 storeys; 5 bays. Central 2-storey basket arch over
North Street has window above. Friars Gate on left has mid C19 two-storey left
range with moulded parapet. Half-glazed 4-panelled door with side-lights and
overlight in moulded and chamfered wood surround with cornice. Sash above. Right
part has 16-pane sash to ground and first floors; second floor is blank. Rear
range of Flemish bond brick. 3 storeys; 5 bays. First bay has blocked doorway;
brick to right is inscribed RB 1795. Sashes have gauged brick flat arches. Third
bay on ground floor and second and fourth bays on first floor are blocked.
Interior has mid C19 quarter turn staircase with turned balusters. No.23 has 6
panelled door and overlight. Late C20 window to left, and 20-pane sash to right.
First floor has C20 cross windows. Second floor has 6-pane sashes throughout.
Rendered 2-stormy, 2-window rear range has early C19 six-panelled door and
overlight in reeded wood surround with corner roundels. Ground floor has C20
four-light window; first floor has wood and iron 3-light casements with
horizontal glazing bars. Interior not inspected.
