SHANKLIN SZ5881 CHURCH ROAD 1352-0/8/190 Crab Inn GV II Inn. North-west part late C18 and shown on map of 1792, south-east part mid C19. North-west part of red brick and thatched roof. 1 storey and attics. 3 eyebrow dormers and 3 triple C19 casements. Projecting gabled porch to central bay. South-east part has large mid C19 Isle of Wight coursed stone gable and thatched roof. Fretted bargeboards and pendant. Attic storey has 4-light oriel. 3 casements, 2 with stained glass to ground floor and projecting gabled thatched weatherporch. Henry Longfellow visited the Crab Inn and wrote to his friend G W Green: 'I write you this from a lovely little thatch-roofed inn all covered with ivy, and extremely desirable, for which I have been requested to write an inscription which reads: O traveller, stay thy weary feet; Drink of this fountain pure and sweet; It flows for rich and poor the same. Then go thy way, remembering still The wayside well beneath the hill The cup of water in His name.'
