12/91 King Alfred Monument


Monument in centre of Market Place. 1913. Tapered panelled base
on two steps. Above, a life-sized cloaked and crowned statue of
King Alfred holding long sword and oval shield. Erected to
commemmorate the Coronation of 1911, Alfred having held land in
Pewsey. Inscription reads: It was his/a sinking nations/fame to
save/to foster/latent worth/and patriot zeal/and build on virtues/
based a nations weal. The monument occupies the focal point in the
centre of Pewsey.
