11/258 Mooltan Barracks
Cavalry barracks, 1903-10, now 1st Battalion the Queens Regiment.
Red brick in English bond, slate roofs. Four barrack blocks in
formal lines to rear of Officers' Mess (q.v.). Each block of 2
storeys, comprising 4 units each of 7 bays, with access galleries
on inner face, cast iron with reinforced concrete floor, and
wrought iron balustrade. Each unit is divided from its neighbour
with a fire wall, and has an ablutions block to rear, and a
storeroom block with open steel stair on front, shared between two
adjacent blocks. Boarded paired doors with overlight to through
corridor between 2 barrack rooms in each unit, and sash windows,
also with overlights, all in segmental headed openings. Roofs
hipped. One of a group of relatively unaltered Edwardian military
buildings laid out to a formal plan, and in a style characteristic
of the British army in its heyday.
