5/23 Garden Flat and former Kitchen
Garden Walls
(formerly listed as Garden house at
12.12.51 Charlton Park and garden walls)


Two garden pavilions and perimeter walls of former kitchen garden.
Pavilions and walls late C18 (possibly carried out in 1772-6 by the
younger Matthew Brettingham when he was working on the mansion;
q.v.); exedra linking pavilions is early C20. Flemish bond
brickwork with ashlar dressings; hipped stone slate roofs to
pavilions with stone stacks. Pavilions of 2 storeys with early C20
canted bays to ground floor and Diocletian window above: 12-pane
sashes to bays, 16-pane sashes to thermal windows. Centre slightly
advances, first floor platband, moulded cornice and central
blocking course with 3 ball finials to each pavilion. Linking
convex exedra of brick with free-standing Ionic columns and coupled
columns to centre. Kitchen garden walls ramped up to pavilions
with round-headed entrances with wrought iron gates; some rubble
to west facade of walls and rear of pavilions, brick to inner with
ashlar coping. Walls 3 metres in height encompassing the former
kitchen garden with central linking wall forming 2 separate areas.
