Apsley House and gate piers
House, now Museum. c1830-40. Ashlar Bath stone, slate roof.
Central stack. 2-storey front block, split to 3 storeys at rear.
2 bays, with central hallway to rear stair. 2 rooms deep.
Connection to late C20 extension on right. Ground floor rusticated
without perpends between end pilasters. Central entrance Greek
Doric portico with crested entablature on wide stepped podium.
Semi-circular fanlight with coloured glass. Round-headed full
height windows, margin glazed with etched flashed glass. Simple
lugged architraves to first floor windows, 12-pane sashes with
margin glazing. Recessed panel below reeded. Centre bay broken
forward. Cornice and parapet with acroteriae. Facade has
comtemporary extension left.
Interior: Groined vault in hallway. Reception room right has
plaster cornice. Stacks to rear walls. Stair with 3 straight
balusters per tread. Rusticated gatepiers to forecourt with
anthemion block cappings.
