6/163 The Obelisk
Obelisk. 1839-40 for Henry Hugh Hoare, to replace the 1746 obelisk
by Privet. Bath stone tapered shaft on square green limestone
base. Top surmounted by metal sun disc. Memorial plaque on side
facing house, from original obelisk and placed here by Colt Hoare
1815, to his grandfather Henry Hoare. Stands in important position
at end of turfed terrace walk and in line with centre of west front
of Stourhead House (q.v.).
