6/89 Knott Farmhouse
Farmhouse, 1695, altered. Rubble with stone slate roof. House of 2 cells, formerly
with baffle entry at right hand end of front, now with central lobby and stairs.
Two storeys and three bays. Quoins. Two-storey porch in middle bay has ashlar
front and jettied upper storey, carried on moulded course which lifts slightly
over the enriched lintel of the moulded doorway. Lintel is carved "IL AL EL"
(for John, Ann and Edmund Laycock) and date. Upper storey has ovolo-moulded
window of Venetian pattern with hollow spandrels and stepped hoodmould, flanked
by bulbous detached colonnettes with cabled rings, supported on moulded corbels.
Moulded coping and kneelers to gable. Double chamfered stone mullion windows
of two large lights to each floor to left, each lacking 2 mullions and perhaps
a transom to ground floor. Hoodmould to ground floor interrupted by porch, as
is that of similar single light to right. Single light without hoodmould over.
Gable chimneys. Inside there is a very large segmental arched fireplace in right
hand room with moulded jambs and voussoirs. A photograph shows that the porch
stood until late C19 at the right hand end of the front.
